Furnace Repair or Replace? How to Decide
Five questions that tell you whether to fix your furnace or invest in a new one.

When your furnace starts acting up, the first question is always the same: repair it, or replace it? These five questions point to the right answer.
How old is it? Most gas furnaces last 15 to 20 years. If yours is past 15 and needs a major repair, replacement is often the smarter spend. And what will the repair cost? A good rule of thumb: if it's more than a third of the price of a new unit, lean toward replacing.
Are your energy bills creeping up? Older furnaces lose efficiency, and a modern high-efficiency unit can noticeably cut winter heating costs. Finally, is it heating evenly and safely? Frequent short-cycling, uneven rooms, or any sign of a cracked heat exchanger means it's time to talk replacement.
